Budget Impact Analysis to Support Increased Uptake for a Surgical Stapler
Anastomosis is a surgical procedure to connect to ends of a channel together, for example, reconnecting the severed ends of the intestine after bowel resection surgery. Our client, a medical device manufacturer, had little clinical evidence to support the higher price of the ECHELON CIRCULAR™ powered stapler compared to manual circular staplers which is the standard of care (SOC) for anastomosis. Furthermore, the clinical data was not head-to-head, so not easily compared.
Since the ECHELON CIRCULAR™ powered stapler (ECP) reduced complications (anastomotic leak, bleeding, and infection), a financial argument could be made to justify the additional cost of the stapler.
- Built a budget impact analysis using recently published complication costs and a recently conducted matched indirect comparison of ECP and SOC
- Findings showed that despite the higher price, annual savings due to avoided complications with ECP ranged from $41,263 (bleeding) and $44,903 (anastomotic leak) to $67,978 (infection), assuming 100 procedures per year with each type of stapler
